The artist’s book «Fracturas Expuestas» (Exposed Fractures) reflects on the representation of nature in Chile, using the mountain as a metaphor to make these relationships visible. Centered on the Andes Mountains—a crucial element in the identity and representation of Chilean territory throughout its history—this book explores different perspectives and temporalities. The series is composed of three records that offer varied temporal scales and worldviews, featuring brief appearances from historical archives. Additionally, a single image is presented in different ways throughout the book, exploring its capacity to appear and disappear, and employing various visual procedures as strategies that seek to be a metaphor for repairing the mountain. At the same time, a text accompanies the images, intended to be a historical journey tensioned by vital experience, proposing an alternative possibility for thinking of ourselves in, with, and from the mountain range.

Residencies

The residency took place at the GPA (Grupo de Publicaciones Artísticas) Artistic Publications Laboratory, at the Faculty of Arts of Universidad Finis Terrae, in Santiago, Chile, as a space where research already underway since 2018 on the mountain found an editorial form: the three archives that had until then circulated as separate photographs — the images from the artist’s father, an engineer and collaborator with the dictatorship, documenting large-scale construction projects between 1970 and 1990; the artist’s own survey of the urban edges of the Santiago Metropolitan Region, begun in 2021; and the SERNATUR archive, now held at the National Library, with images from 1976 to 1994 tied to the construction of national identity during the dictatorship and the first years of the return to democracy — came together and settled into the artist’s book «Fracturas Expuestas,» produced in an edition of 25 copies in 2024, where fracture stopped being merely a photographed subject and became an editorial principle: something read in the cut of the pages, in the sequence of images, and in the very materiality of the paper.
