María/Rosario Montero (1978) is a feminist artist-researcher, PhD in Cultural Studies (Goldsmith, UK), MA in Digital Anthropology (UCL, UK) and MA in Visual Arts (U. Chile). he has received funding from FONDART (artistic production), ANID (postgraduate study), a postdoctoral fellowship at the Instituto de Estética (PUC Chile), and the CCU Arte fellowship (second prize). Her latest publication is “Una línea Marca el Horizonte: Fotografía Contemporánea del paisaje en Chile” (A Line Marks the Horizon: Contemporary Landscape Photography in Chile). Her research addresses how power structures affect representations/perceptions of nature, landscape, identity and territory. She currently serves as Researcher and Coordinator of Research-Creation at Universidad Finis Terrae and is a member of the art collective Agencia de Borde.
María/Rosario Montero (1978) es artista-investigadora feminista, doctora en Estudios Culturales (Goldsmith, UK), Máster en Antropología Digital (UCL, UK) Y Magister en Artes Visuales (U. Chile). Ha sido financiada por FONDART (producción artística), ANID (perfeccionamiento académico), una beca postdoctoral en el Instituto de Estética (PUC Chile) y la Beca Arte CCU (segundo lugar). Su última publicación realizada junto a Metales Pesados se titula “Una línea Marca el Horizonte: Fotografía Contemporánea del paisaje en Chile”. Su investigación aborda cómo las estructuras de poder afectan las representaciones/percepciones sobre la naturaleza, el paisaje, la identidad y el territorio. Actualmente se desempeña como académica investigadora y Directora de Investigación-Creación en la Universidad Finis Terrae. Forma parte del colectivo Agencia de Borde y reside en Santiago de Chile.
STATEMENT
As a feminist research artist, I am interested in how power structures affect landscape, identity, and territory representations. I approach the topic from a theory-practice perspective, considering thinking, sensing and doing as relevant parts of knowledge production. As such, I work in the liminal space between art and anthropology by the methods used (ethnographic observation, photography and digital media) and the issues addressed. My work challenges the aesthetic value of the visual arts and questions the objectivity of ethnographic representation. My primary tools are my experience of embodying territorialised knowledge and photography. Thus, the photographic apparatus as an object of mediation provides tools that allow the displacement, interpretation and appropriation of the issues worked. Finally, I aim to question the photographic image’s indexical character and its colonial instrumentalisation.
Como artista-investigadora feminista, me interesa abordar cómo las estructuras de poder afectan las representaciones sobre el paisaje, la identidad y el territorio. Problematizo estos temas desde una perspectiva teórico-práctica, considerando el pensar, sentir y hacer como partes relevantes de la producción de conocimiento. Como tal, trabajo en el espacio liminal entre el arte y la antropología. Por los métodos utilizados (observación etnográfica, fotografía y medios digitales) y los temas abordados, pretendo desarrollar una teoría-práctica que trascienda las clasificaciones disciplinarias. Mi trabajo desafía el valor estético de las artes visuales y cuestiona la objetividad de la representación etnográfica. Mis herramientas principales son mi propia experiencia de conocimiento territorializado y la fotografía. Así, el aparato fotográfico como objeto de mediación proporciona herramientas que permiten el desplazamiento, interpretación y apropiación de los temas trabajados, pretendiendo con esto cuestionar el carácter inicial de la imagen fotográfica y su instrumentalización colonial.
